Film lovers tend to fall somewhere between those who enjoy surprise and unpredictability, and those who know exactly the look they are after — yet still get excited by the element of surprise that comes with film development.

Many of us have a soft spot for certain aesthetic qualities in the look of our images. The final result of a photograph is shaped by many factors: it begins with the light and the real tones of the scene, continues through the equipment used and the exposure (a key element), and finally comes down to a scan tailored towards a particular style. At this final stage, the room for adjustment will depend on everything that came before.
